2019 Feather Fund Donation

Right before Breyerfest I finished painting my Feather Fund donation. Every year at Pony Penning, The Feather Fund buys a pony for the winner of their annual essay contest. Sometimes more than one kid wins and is given a pony. During Pony Penning Week, The Feather Fund has a model horse auction to fund the buying of the ponies. This year I was only able to do one model.

It’s painted to look like *my* buyback foal, Surfer’s Blue Moon.

I’m happy with her and I can’t wait to see which ponies go home with the winners this year! If you’re interested in donating to this–the whole premise is to paint a model horse to resemble one of the Chincoteague Ponies on Assateague, past or present. Surfer Dude died a few years ago and there are still models being painted to look like him. The donations for this year’s auction is closed, but it’s never too early to start on next year!

It Twas A Good Try

Okay, so this was an awesome package to receive. It’s Van Gogh, the medallion for NaMoPaiMo. This is my first medallion, and it’s even more awesome that my first one is tied to NaMoPaiMo. He was sculpted by Kylee Parks and was sent by Jennifer Buxton. Thanks again!

My NaMoPaiMo model is back to prepping. I couldn’t get all of the paint off of him, so some sanding has been needed. As I put on more and more layers on he started to get a green tint to him. It got to the point to where I couldn’t ignore it anymore, so back to the drawing board it was. While I’m sad he has been stripped, I learned a lot with oils. I don’t foresee him being done in time to be a winner, but I’m happy with being challenged to do a color I haven’t tried in years with a new medium.

Even though painting has been more of a learning experience than an actual finished model, tack making has been going well. Here’s a nameplate halter tree. I’ve been making donation halters for NaMoPaiMo since January. I put the last nameplate on the other day, so they’re in the mail!

I’ve really enjoyed reading and learning from NaMoPaiMo, even if it was more of a good try than actually finishing!

Sending Them Off

I’m not going down to Pony Penning this year, but my friend Madison of Gyrfalcon Studios is. She and I both painted model horses for the Feather Fund  model horse auction. So I gave my models to her to take down. Last year I sent two in the mail and one ended up with broken ears. So this year I know they’ll get there in one piece.

I painted three foals during the summer for the auction. The model horse auction is unique in that the models being auctioned off are to be portraits of actual island ponies.

I am far from being a seamstress, but I did make pony pouches for them (and their future owners).

Have fun in Chincoteague Madison!

Model Horse Day

Madison Pollihan of Gryfalcon Studios and I had a model horse day yesterday. We both donate to The Feather Fund, so that’s what we worked on. This is the first time that I can say my donations may be in early.
I brought along my airbrush,

and a primed foal.
The Feather Fund model horse auction is held every year during Pony Penning. Portraits of the local ponies are sold to fund the organization. Every year an essay contest is run, and the winning child wins a Chincoteague Pony foal. To read more about how The Feather Fund Started, here’s the link-here.
I airbrushed, while Madison used oils.

Here’s Giant Soul Surfer with tiny Soul Surfer.

Giant Soul Surfer is by Madison. The tiny one was painted by me.
Here’s Suede, who was also a 2014 buyback.
Madison’s cat, Frisky, watched our painting. It was a ton of fun!
