Impromptu

When I got home after work, my mom had an idea. An impromptu trip to Gettysburg for dinner. Gettysburg isn’t too far from me. About 45 minutes-1 hour away.
The last time I’d been to Gettysburg it wasn’t tourist season, so the streets had been empty. Today we even saw carriages.

When my mom first became a State Trooper, Gettysburg was the first place she worked at. Her favorite place to eat at was the Dobbin House Tavern, so that’s where she took my sister and me.

The restaurant is Gettysburg’s oldest and most historic building. It was built in 1776 by Reverend Alexander Dobbin. It has been kept to look the same as it did two hundred years ago. The full history can be read here.

To get to the restaurant you actually take stairs to go below ground and you also eat by candle light.

Wasn’t this dark. Decided to take an artsy picture with the candle.

The menu had numerous types of food, but I opted for French Onion soup and a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich (the menu gave it a cooler name). The waitresses and waiters all wore period-clothing.

We walked around the historic part of town after dinner. Walking included stopping at some shops and seeing different types of things.
So much is happening.

I came home with Confederate and Northern States paper money.
It was a nice and fun night, filled with delicious food! Impromptu outings can be fun.

4th of July Jump

I’ve had this idea in my head for a while and put it to paper today. It’s going to be a book shelf themed jump.

Dyed.
I started making books to fill in the space. They’re larger than the other ones I’ve made.
Since they’ll be glued down once I’m done with them, I didn’t use paper. Instead I glued the front and back cover to foam board.
Here’s the dyed shelves at the end of the night with the first bunch of completed books. And for scale, there’s a pony.
And also, Happy 4th of July!

Better Than The Book

I finished a traditional girth today. I’m happy with it and will finish sealing it in the morning.

I also saw Me and Earl and The Dying Girl in the theaters today with a friend. Since it was a limited release, it took it a while for the movie to get to where I lived. It’s based off of the book of the same name. When movies are made from books, the go to response is ‘well the book is always better.’ In this case, the movie surpassed the book. By a lot. I read the book on the cruise and felt ehh about it. But the movie was just awesome.

Also, Breyerfest is in 13 days. So the countdown begins.

Portals, Reflections, and Mirrors

I made some miniature books today. I was trying to finish a tack project, but it wasn’t working. So miniature books happened instead.

Carl the Zombie made a cameo (I thought I’d lost Carl, but he was found).

A zombie reading a zombie book.

A friend gave me her view of  book categories that I thought was interesting. I can’t remember it word for word, but the gist was that books are portals, reflections, or mirrors. Now, when I read a book I really don’t think about categories. If it sounds good, I pick it up.
She said portals take you to other ‘worlds’. They’re an escape.

Left to Right: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Clockwork Princess, City of Bones, Girl Of Nightmares

Reflections make you sit back after you’re done reading and think. They’re gateways into lifestyles/classes you don’t live in.

Left To Right: The Fault In Our StarsThe OutsidersTo Kill A Mockingbird

Mirrors are close to portals. You can escape into them, but there’s something more to just escaping. There’s a message inside. They reflect life, but not in an exact image.

Left to Right: Hunger GamesCatching Fire ,MockingjayLord Of The FliesFahrenheit 451
Have you read any of these actual books? What did you think of them?

I made a specific board on Pinterest for miniature books, so if you like them, here’s a board with covers so you can make your own! Link
