The Tack Box

At numerous shows, I have seen awesome tack boxes.
The ones I’ve loved were always similar to…

or this.
They always seemed to be out of my grasp. I couldn’t figure out how to make it.
A couple of days ago it finally hit me.
A regular box flipped on its side (yes, this is what held me up).
So I had a snow day today which meant I had a chance to try to make one.
I decided to go small before going large.
This is the result.
It has four hooks for four bridles or halters. There’s space for two saddles, English or Western sized. Native American or Arab sized costumes will not fit. The bottom has space for saddle pads.  While it isn’t large by any means, it is a great start. And it was alot of fun to make.

Saw It

After pouring the rest of the resin into the river scene, I was too anxious and nervous to see what happened, so I went back inside the house and started on a Sawbuck Pack Set. I finished it minus the halter.
It was alot of fun, except for the innumerable amount of buckles it needed.

It isn’t adjusted right now, I need to do research on it. That will be for later, since I have no idea how they are supposed to fit the horse/mule/donkey. I just made it :)

New Books

I love tack how-to books. They’re great if you can’t find any reference pictures of a particular piece of tack or if you just don’t know how to make something.
Two things that I always thought were cool but couldn’t find enough reference pictures, and also had no clue about how to start are the pack saddle and pony express saddle.
So these two things came in the mail. (Pics are from here). If you are getting into tack making, or need help with making things, I highly recommend buying books from Carrie Olguin.
