Tallyho

In August, Sam invited me to the racetrack. It was a family Friday evening that included food trucks. Horses + food trucks? Absolutely.

Storm clouds brewed the whole day. By the time we got off work, it was raining. I checked the weather forecast which said it’d be sunny by post time.

However, no matter the positive forecast, only a singular food truck showed up. We bought food and found a spot to watch the races. I also saw this as an opportunity to capture some references for a painting that’d been in my head.

My goal for 2023 was to do 2D work, particularly using up the copious amount of canvases I own. I didn’t get to it as much, so it’ll be a 2024 activity.

It was so fun to watch the horses—no breakdowns occurred. No horse was pulled up due to an injury. That’s the hard part about watching racing anymore—the potential of something bad happening.

Everyone around us seemed to have a good time too. I loved this horse.

I kept taking photos until I got a shot that closely reflected what was in my head.

This turned out to be a great evening!
