Share Something Good

The kyle rittenhouse verdict wasn’t surprising, but that didn’t decrease the disappointment and the punch it kicked. I allowed myself to drown in my anger for a bit. I scrolled through Facebook and then opened up Twitter. Reading threads that turned my raw anger into concise and thoughtful words was exactly what I needed.

After so many of these trials in my memory, with Trayvon Martin being my most vivid one almost ten years ago, these verdicts haven’t gotten easier. Expecting a particular outcome and it coming true doesn’t feel like a victory. Sometimes I wish I could pretend these high profile cases weren’t happening. Sometimes it would be easier to put on narrow glasses on to dampen the issues around me. But I can’t.

I think to an interview by Toni Morrison and her response to being asked about racial violence and her attitude. She said:

“I insist on being shocked. I am never going to become immune. I think that’s a kind of failure to see so much of it that you die inside. I want to be surprised and shocked every time.”

So I kept doom scrolling across various platforms before coming across a tweet that asked readers to post something good that happened to them in the last week, no matter how big or small.

The thread wasn’t created to erase the news. Anger is a powerful thing, but so is finding joy. There’s so much work to be done, but that doesn’t mean I need to be front row 24/7 to a circus I didn’t ask to be invited to.

Which made me pivot. What good has happened to me? My Breyerfest Studio Thornrose package came more than a week before, but I’m still going to count it as something good. I need to do an actual Breyerfest loot post, but until then, this is something good that happened.

And I received an Advance Reader Copy of Victoria Schwab’s new book, Gallant, which comes out in March. She’s one of my favorite authors, so it was exciting get this!

The world is a dumpster fire, but sometimes it’s wise to pause and ponder about the goodness that occurs.
